Asciano
A medieval village with timeless charm
Nestled in the heart of the famous Crete Senesi, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, stands the ancient village of Asciano.
Its thousand-year history is evidenced by the discovery of an Etruscan necropolis and a precious mosaic dating back to Roman times.
With its picturesque squares, ancient buildings and charming views, Asciano is a typical medieval village of timeless beauty. Strolling through the streets of the historic centre, you can admire Piazza del Grano with its fountain depicting allegories of a fascinating medieval culture and Palazzo del Podestà with its ancient coats of arms.
Asciano offers many places of interest and attractions, such as the Basilica of Sant'Agata and the churches of Sant'Agostino and San Francesco. The latter houses a splendid work by the Della Robbia workshop.
Also worth visiting are the Palazzo Corboli Museum, a prestigious medieval palace offering a journey through the history of the area with Etruscan and medieval works of art, and the Cassioli Museum, dedicated to 19th-century Sienese painting.
A few kilometres from Asciano, surrounded by cypress trees and badlands, stands the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a fascinating monastic complex that is home to the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto.
In December, the municipality of Asciano transforms into a riot of flavours with the White Truffle Market Exhibition, showcasing the region's delicacy.
